What is a Lockout Padlock?
Lockout Tagout or LOTO is a safety procedure used to prevent the release of Hazard energy and ensuring plant and machinery cannot be started up prior to the completion of maintenance or repair work. When applying a lockout device, a Lockout Padlock is used to secure the device in place.
1 employee / 1 padlock / 1 key is a common procedure, this means all employees carry a unique key and no one else can open another colleagues safety padlock.
Lockout Padlocks are available in a range of colours, and key configurations, some of the common terms associated with lockout padlocks are:
Keyed Different (KD) – this means every lock has its individual key and cannot open another lock.
Keyed Alike (KA) – this means all locks in a set can be opened with the same key.
Master Key (MK) – this is when a master key can open all the locks in a set although each lock has its own unique key.
Some of the kinds of padlocks that are common are, Steel Shackle, Nylon or Non Conductive shackle, long shackle, cable padlocks, computer key padlocks & Aluminium padlocks.
